I am teaching a class on Mask Making and this is my go to book for its organization and range. I can share with students quickly. Most of the photos are small but they are in color and there is an explanation for each. They are presented by region and culture, including sections on protest and steampunk that I found useful and fun as well. Each array of masks is previewed with an introduction that gives background and context. There is also a how to guide in terms of collecting. I found all the information accessible, thoughtful and extensive with is variety.
This book is truly a cornucopia of masks. There are sections for each continent, hundreds of colour photos, and a few words about the provence, history or significance of each mask. There's also an extensive bibliography, and plenty of enthusiastic tips on other great mask resources. There's plenty of African masks, and much about Mexico, as you would expect from an American publication. The European section is quite small, and a little generalised, but there are so many other marvellous things to enjoy in this book, that it's just a minor quibble. Robert Ibold's previous book 'Masks from Around the World' is also worth buying, which highlights different masks from his fabulous collection. As there's no repetition between the books, it's nice to have both.
Fascinating insight into masks around the world. Great starting point when searching out masks from various countries
Though full of promise and pictures, it's less than you'd think. Most photos are postage stamp size with a short paragraph of description. On the plus side, it's full of photos and inspiration if you're wanting to arouse your mask making creativity. On the minus side, it's not very informative.
An excellent book by a master of masks.
Pros: Lots of nice color photos of masks from around the world. An expansive collection of a plethora of masks indeed.Cons: The descriptions of the masks say not a single thing about the symbolism, evolution, specific tribes or original usage. From an author that claims to only collect the very best of all authentic masks, this shallow and pedestrian explanation raises into question his supposed knowledge on the subject altogether.The author is wildly pretentious in his assertations that a true mask collection has no value (artistic or otherwise) if the masks were not used in ceremony. This ostentatious perspective is highly disappointing. The book is not titled "Authentic Ceremonial Masks of the World", it's called "Masks of the World".The author claims repeatedly that a mask or collection isn't "good" unless the masks were used in a ceremony. Preposterous. The definition of a good art collection is one that makes the owner feel pride and joy. If you see something at a yard sale that sings to your heart and soul, THAT is a wonderful addition to your collection. Don't let this pretentious snob tell you otherwise, and certainly don't buy his book.Bob Ibold needs to get over himself.
This book offers the reader a broad view of the great variety of masks that have been in use in the last 50 years or so. When the author, Bob Ibold, asked me to write the forward, I readily agreed, because I had been familiar with his various mask collections for more than a decade. Having agreed to that task, I then assigned myself another job, to go through the first draft of this book with a critical eye. I asked myself whether the masks in the book were accurately and meaningfully described, so that they were likely to be truly useful for a curious reader. Of course I identified places where the descriptions required tweaking, but my overall impression was that this book was exactly what the author said he intended to write, a comprehensive introduction to the world's masks. Over the years there have been other books with the same goal, but this one goes far beyond the rest in its systematic survey of so many areas with so many examples.This book is for you if:1. You are curious about the variety of ways that native peoples have used masks,2. You work with children and you want to inspire them to create masks to please themselves,3. You admire masks in flea markets but you are uncertain about their identity or meaning.Down the road, if you find that you have become highly interested in masks of a particular style or from a particular region, then you will need to move beyond this book to others that are more specialized. This is an introductory book, and it does not pretend to provide such an in depth explanation of the masks of a particular region that you will learn everything that you might need to know. For example, although the author provides ample warning to the new collector about the possibility that a particularly interesting mask may be a reproduction of an original mask or an invention, he cannot provide the necessary details in this modest book to evaluate every mask for authenticity.When I went through this book, I learned a lot. I expect that you will too.
